Reading aloud to third graders is an of import, maybe fifty-fifty magical affair. Tertiary course, when kids are approximately 8 or 9 years onetime, is a time when kids can really turn into readers.

In his formidable book, The Read-Aloud Handbook, Jim Trelease says that by fourth grade, only 54% of kids are reading for pleasure. So, before they get whatever older, and while they're still interested in listening to a skillful volume, tertiary course is the time to create magical reading connections and assistance kids get lifelong readers.

Tertiary form is also the perfect fourth dimension to brainstorm introducing volume series to kids. Reading aloud the start book in a neat series tin can open the door for them to continue reading for pleasance on their ain.  I've included plenty of fantastic book series on this list.

Tips for Reading Aloud to 3rd Graders

Let your 3rd grader(south) pick the book. At our house, when nosotros're picking what to read aloud, I oft assemble three or four choices and read the first chapter (or the first couple pages/paragraphs) so we vote (but my vote counts too).

Continue their hands busy. By tertiary grade, you lot're probably reading aloud longer books with longer chapters. In society for piffling listeners to stay focused on the story, information technology helps to give them something to proceed their hands busy. My kids like coloring sheets/coloring books, or simply cartoon in notebooks. You could also try puzzles, clay/playdough, or other placidity crafts. You can even give them a copy of the volume to follow along silently while y'all read aloud. Find what works for your third graders.

Read often (everyday if possible). This volition not simply help your third grader stay engaged with the story, but information technology will create a positive addiction of daily reading. Listening is an art and it can have some regular practice to hone it.  10 or 15 minutes everyday will always exist better than an hr ane solar day a week.

Quit a volume if you need to. If a book just isn't working for your listeners (or you), quit. Don't force yourself to slog through a volume your listeners are not enjoying. The goal here is to create positive reading memories and experiences, so it's okay to stop and pick a new book if things aren't going well.
