How to Get Rid of Flies and Mosquitoes

Bugs and insects are a common pest in the Philippines. Follow our helpful tips for getting rid of unwanted guests such as flies, fleas and mosquitoes in your home.

Check your doors and windows for easy entry points. Fly screens are a great way to keep flying insects at bay, but don't forget to check them regularly for tears and holes.

Controlling Flies, Fleas, and Mosquitoes at Home

Getting rid of bugs and insects need not be a buzz kill. Read on for some handy tips on fly and mosquito control, and getting rid of pests such as fleas:

  • The first rule for fly control is good sanitation. Cover any uneaten food, wash dishes immediately after use, make sure your bin has a well-fitting lid and is cleaned regularly. To clean your bin, use an all-purpose bleach like Domex. By removing flies' food sources and potential breeding grounds, they are more likely to take up residence elsewhere.

  • A basic swatter (or even a rolled up newspaper) is useful for getting rid of flies, but you'll need to be coordinated. House flies tend to rest indoors in the sunshine during the day, so are easier to swat – most flies take off backwards, so bear this in mind when you're taking aim. The less coordinated can invest in electric swatters, sticky fly strips or chemical fly sprays to get rid of flies and other airborne bugs – make sure to always read the label before use, and always use chemicals and sprays as instructed and in a well-ventilated area.

How to Get Rid of Fleas

  • Getting rid of flea infestations can be a frustrating and costly experience, not to mention itchy! You'll need to treat both the source of the fleas (usually a domestic animal), and any lived-in areas of your home. Treat your pet with a vet-approved flea shampoo or treatment. Safety first: always follow the instructions on the label to ensure that you are using the product correctly.

  • Once you've treated your pet, you'll need to get rid of fleas throughout the rest of your home (only 10% of a flea infestation is likely to be living on your furry friend – the rest will be in carpets, cushions, bedsheets and furniture). Thoroughly wash all toys, bedding and soft furnishings that could have come into contact with the flea infestation. Anything that can't be washed will need to be thrown away. Use a vacuum cleaner across all surfaces, including the sofa – don't forget to empty the vacuum far away of the house so as not to reintroduce the fleas or their eggs.

  • Thoroughly disinfect all wipeable surfaces, using good quality cleaner such as Cif. Don't forget to read the instructions carefully before use to ensure the product is safe to use.

  • Most smaller-scale flea infestations will require treatment with a special insecticide, which you can pick up in your local hardware store. Always read the instructions on the insecticide container before use, and check the ingredients to see if the product is pet-friendly or suitable for families with children.

  • If you can't get rid of fleas by yourself, or are unsure of what chemicals are safe to use around your family or pets, it is always better to call in the professionals.

How To Get Rid of Mosquitoes

  • With their nasty bite and reputation for carrying a variety of diseases, the best way to control mosquitoes is to try to keep them out of your home in the first place. Avoid having areas of standing or stagnant water close to your home, such as ponds or water barrels, which can become a mosquito breeding ground. Outside and on window ledges, plant citronella to deter mosquitoes, or inside, use an incense burner with a few drops of citronella or lavender oil as a natural deterrent.

  • Keep food covered and surfaces clean.

  • If you need some extra help with getting rid of flies and fleas, invest in an electric swatter, some fly strips, or a chemical insecticide spray.

  • Always read the instruction label on insecticides and use in a well-ventilated area.
